The Evidence
There is overwhelming evidence that the traditional ‘disconnected’ model for managing MSK injuries is a failed model. Put simply, there is far too much reliance on unnecessary and expensive diagnostic tests (such as MRIs) and surgeries and the fragmented model means patients often sit waiting for access to appropriate advice and care when they could be on the road to recovery.
Thankfully, recent years have witnessed the emergence of a range of technologies that are set to transform the field of MSK injury prevention and management.
These technologies are enabling a much more efficient integrated care model characterised by:
- Early screening and intervention,
- Access to appropriate levels of care, advice, and feedback in the context that suits the patient,
- Use of digital supports to empower the patient role in recovery and secondary prevention.
Over Reliance on expensive diagnostic tests
Recent studies have shown a complete misuse of MSK MRI requests in primary care in the UK, with only 4.9% clearly indicated. Our advanced-practice physios manage all referral decisions, and less than 0.5% of our cases are referred to MRI.
Unnecessary Surgeries:
Independent case reviews suggest that as many as 75% of arthroscopic knee surgeries could have been avoided with appropriate exercise-based rehabilitation.
